Chronic, non-healing wounds often require treatment by a physician specially trained in wound care. Wounds cared for by a specialist are often resulting from specific conditions, including:
If a wound does not heal after eight weeks, or show improvement after four weeks, it is considered a chronic or non-healing wound and should be under the care of a specialist with experience in wound care.
Wound care is most successful when part of an interdisciplinary model of care, so patients may also have services such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, pain management, and nutritious services as part of their care plan.
