WCHC Recognized as a Top 100 Critical Access Hospital for the Third Time in Recent Years

Washington, Iowa – 2/21/2025 – Washington County Hospital and Clinics (WCHC) is honored to be named one of the Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals in the nation once again—marking the third time in recent years that we have received this prestigious recognition. This achievement reaffirms our dedication to excellence in rural healthcare and our unwavering commitment to providing exceptional patient care, safety, and community service.

This designation, awarded by The Chartis Center for Rural Health, highlights WCHC’s continued focus on quality, accountability, and compassionate care. As a leader in rural healthcare, WCHC strives to exceed patient expectations while delivering top-tier medical services to our community.

“We are incredibly proud to once again be recognized among the top-performing critical access hospitals in the country,” said Todd Patterson, CEO of WCHC. “This achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our medical staff, clinical teams, support personnel, and Board of Trustees. Every day, we strive to provide more in quality, safety, and patient experience, ensuring that the communities we serve receive the very best care possible.”

Aiming for Top 20 Again in 2025

Last year, WCHC was further distinguished as a Top 20 Critical Access Hospital in the Nation, an honor that highlights hospitals providing the highest level of performance among their peers. WCHC is hopeful to achieve this elite status once again in 2025, with the results expected in May.

Commitment to Rural Healthcare Excellence

Critical access hospitals play a vital role in ensuring that rural communities have access to high-quality healthcare. Among approximately 1,353 critical access hospitals nationwide, WCHC continues to stand out for its exceptional patient care and operational excellence.

The Chartis Rural Hospital Performance INDEX™, now in its 15th year, is regarded as the industry’s most comprehensive and objective assessment of rural hospital performance. The recognition is based on key performance indicators such as quality outcomes, patient experience, market share, and cost efficiency.

WCHC remains steadfast in its mission to provide leading-edge healthcare services to Washington County and the surrounding areas, ensuring that patients receive More Than You Expect for Your Healthcare.
