Joni’s Story

Joni Erwin with Amy Hoyle, RN and David Schluetter, RN

Joni Erwin lives in Clear Lake, where she’s the District 2 Field Manager for Iowa Corn. But when it comes to treating her recently diagnosed Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Joni chooses Washington County Hospital and Clinics.

“I grew up in Washington and that’s where I wanted to receive my care,” says Joni. “It’s well worth the drive.”

Joni first noticed something was wrong in May 2020. “I was having real trouble with my balance,” Joni remembers. “Playing golf, I would start my swing and almost fall over. I was also having trouble speaking.”

Dr. Todd Ajax, a board-certified neurologist with Washington County Hospital and Clinics, confirmed that Joni had MS. “Every time I see Dr. Ajax, his extensive knowledge of my condition amazes me,”Joni says. “He’s very supportive.”

Once every six months, Joni travels to Washington County Hospital and Clincs and meets with her care team, which includes Amy Hoyle, RN, and David Schluetter, RN, to receive an infusion treatment for her MS. “They are very friendly and always take good care of me,” says Joni.

A recent follow-up MRI showed definite improvement. “Before my treatment, I tried walking heel-to-toe across the kitchen and lost my balance about 15 times,” Joni says. “Today, I’m running a couple of miles two or three times a week, and I’m training for a 5K. My speech is much better, too. People are surprised when I tell them about the medical services available in my home town. I think that speaks volumes about the quality care provided by Washington County Hospital and Clinics!”
