New system delivers clearer images with greater comfort for patients
Washington, IA — Washington County Hospital and Clinics (WCHC) is proud to announce the arrival of an advanced Hologic 3D Mammography™ system, marking a new era in breast imaging for the region. This latest generation technology includes Clarity HD high-resolution imaging and SmartCurve™ paddles, providing more accurate results and a significantly improved patient experience.
WCHC has offered 3D mammography in the past, but the Clarity HD system elevates image quality with remarkable detail, aiding in the earlier detection of breast cancers — especially in women with dense breast tissue. The system’s high-resolution capabilities allow radiologists to see through overlapping tissue, helping to detect cancers that might otherwise be obscured in standard 2D imaging.
“We’re excited to offer this advanced technology to our community,” said Angie Atkins-Adams, Imaging Manager at WCHC. “The Clarity HD system not only improves the quality of diagnostic images but also makes the process more comfortable for patients, reinforcing our commitment to excellence in women’s health.”
The new SmartCurve™ paddles are designed with patient comfort in mind, fitting the natural curve of the breast to reduce pinching and discomfort during compression — a common concern during mammograms. Together with enhanced imaging capabilities, the WCHC mammography team can now deliver exams that are both more accurate and more comfortable.
Nearly half of women over the age of 40 have dense breast tissue, which can make cancer more difficult to detect. With 3D imaging and Clarity HD technology, radiologists can now identify potential issues earlier, leading to better outcomes and more treatment options for patients.
Medicare, many Medicaid programs, and most private insurance plans cover the cost of an annual 3D Mammography™ exam. For those who may be uninsured or underinsured, WCHC participates in the Care for Yourself program, which may provide mammograms at low or no cost to those who qualify.
