Dr. Plattenberger received her degree from the University of Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines, Iowa. She then attended the Northeast Iowa Family Practice Residency Program in Waterloo, Iowa, for a Family Practice Residency. Dr. Plattenberger is Board Certified in Family Practice.
Curtis Frier, D.O.
Dr. Frier is a native of Washington. He was raised and attended school in Washington, Iowa. After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines, Iowa, where he later graduated.

Dr. Huang is a graduate of the National Defense Medical Center in Taipei, Taiwan. He specializes in Internal Medicine at the Washington Medical Clinic.

David Nacos, MD
Dr. Nacos' medical education includes a BS Degree in Biology from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1984. He then received his MD degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1992. Dr. Nacos went on to the University of Iowa to complete his internship and Family Practice residency in 1995. Dr. Nacos is a member of the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Matt Prihoda, MD
An Iowa resident since 1973, Dr. Prihoda graduated with both his Bachelor's and Master's of Science Degrees from the University of Iowa and then went on to complete his Medical Degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine. He is a clinical lecturer at the The University of Iowa College of Medicine, a member of the Family Practice Advisory Board and on the Board of Directors of the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians.
Debbie Gibbs, MD
Family Practice of Washington Dr. Gibbs' academic accomplishments are impressive; from receiving the Freeman Award for the top graduating senior from the University of Iowa in 1982, to Phi Beta Kappa, to her graduation with a BS with "highest distinction" and her subsequent MD from the University of Iowa College of Medicine. She graduated Alpha Omega from the University, ranking her in the top 3% of her medical school class. Dr. Gibbs was the first practicing female family practitioner in the county.
Ryan Flannery, MD
An Iowa native from Johnston, Iowa, Dr. Flannery joined Family Practice of Washington in September of 2002 as a Family Practice Physician. Dr. Flannery attended St. John's University in Collegeville, MN, where he received a degree in Biology. He then attended the University of Iowa College of Medicine. After receiving his medical degree, he lived in South Bend, Indiana, where he completed his Family Practice Residency. During his last year there, he was elected the Chief Resident. Dr. Flannery has a special interest in pediatrics and elderly care with end-of-life issues.
Debra Baum, PA-C
Debra Baum, Physician Assistant-Certified, has joined the Family Practice of Washington Clinic. Debra received her undergraduate degree from Iowa State University, and graduated with her Masters of Physician Assistant Studies in June 2004 from the University of Iowa College of Medicine Physician Assistant Program. She previously worked at the Monticello Family Practice as a primary care provider and most recently worked at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center-Urgent Care in Onalaska, Wisconsin, until June of 2006. Debra is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants.
Amanda Kleese, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner
Amanda Kleese is a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at Family Practice of Washington. She works four days a week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8am-5pm and Thursdays from 8am-6pm. Amanda received her udnergraduate degree from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). She continued her education at the University of Iowa where she received her Masters of Science in Nursing as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. Her previous experience includes working at the University of Iowa in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and most recently as a Nurse Practitioner in the Orthopedic Department at the University.

Frank Sanfiel, MD
WCHC welcomed Dr. Frank Sanfiel, MD, in November of 2005. Dr. Sanfiel is a graduate of the MeHarry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. He practiced general surgery at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset, Kentucky, before coming to Washington. Dr. Sanfiel, his wife Glenda, and his two children reside in Washington and are excited to be a part of the Washington Community. He is also bi-lingual in Spanish which enables him to better serve our community.
Gene Lariviere, MD
WCHC has announced that Gene Lariviere, MD, has joined the hospital’s medical staff. Dr.Lariviere is a General Surgeon. He will see patients on Mondays at Surgical Healthcare of Washington. Dr. Lariviere received his MD from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. He did a general surgery residency at the University of Kansas, School of Medicine. Dr. Lariviere served as a General Surgeon at Mercy Hospital from 1994 until 2009. He currently is employed by Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton, Iowa. Dr Lariviere consults surgical patients each Monday at the Surgical Healthcare of Washington Office. He specializes in Laparoscopic gallbladder removal, hernia repair, appendectomies, bowel surgery, breast biopsies and other general surgery.

Douglas Boatman, MD & Radiologist
Washington County Hospital and Clinics welcomed Dr. Douglas Boatman in April of 2004. Dr. Boatman has several years of experience as a Radiologist, practicing 27 years at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. He received his BS and MD from the University of Iowa College of Medicine. He completed his Residency at the University of Iowa in Diagnostic Radiology and an Internship at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane, Washington. Dr. Boatman is Board Certified by the American Board of Radiology. Dr. Boatman specializes in Women’s Imaging and Mammography.
Don Miller, MD
Dr. Don Miller, MD, has joined the hospital's medical staff. Dr. Miller is a Board Certified Family Practitioner. He is currently a full-time physician in the Emergency Room at WCHC. Dr. Miller is a graduate of the University of Iowa and completed his Residency at Mercy and St. Lukes in Davenport. Dr. Miller was a physician in Washington from 1980 to 1987, he then moved to Manchester and practiced at Regional Medical Center in Northeast, Iowa. We are pleased to have a physician with prior ties to Washington return to our community.

Heather Marthers, MD
Dr. Marthers is a graduate of one of the top medical schools in the country, Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC. She completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts. She has been a practicing OBGYN for nine years in Conway, South Carolina. Dr. Marthers' expertise will help serve a large need for local Obstetrics and Gynecology coverage. Dr. Marthers and her family live in Washington and are excited to be a part of our healthcare community.
Lloyd Holm, DO
Dr. Holm received his medical degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Before coming to WCHC, Dr. Holm was an Associate Professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Nebraska. In addition to teaching, he also has had a private Obstetrics practice. Because of his experience and expertise he has written numerous articles, been invited to many speaking engagements and received many awards and honors. Dr. Holm is board-certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Holm's expertise will help serve a large need for local Obstetrics and Gynecology coverage.

Lynette Iles, MD
Flexible Family Care's Dr. Iles is a familiar face to the Washington Community. Dr. Iles practiced at Family Practice of Washington from 1994 to April of 2006 and now practices at Flexible Family Care in Washington. She received her medical degree from the University of Missouri School of Medicine.
Paul Towner, MD
Dr. Towner received his undergraduate degree from Purdue University and went on to finish Medical School at the University of Iowa in 1988. He then attended the University of Wisconsin Wausau Family Practice Residency Program until 1991. Dr. Towner was recognized with the McNeil Award for clinical research, the Society of Teachers Award and Outstanding Student Award in Family Practice.
Cardiology
Stephan Schomer, M.D.
Dr. Stephan Schomer, M.D. earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa in 1987. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine in 1990 and a Cardiology fellowship in 1993, both also from the University of Iowa. He is Board-certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Diseases.
Dr. Schomer practices non-interventional cardiology, including diagnostic heart catheterization. His special interests include the diagnosis and treatment of unexplained syncope as well as the brain’s control over heart rate and blood pressure, which were his areas of research while at the University of Iowa. Dr. Schomer practices at the Iowa City Heart Center, P.C. in Iowa City, which is affiliated through Mercy Hospital.

Dr. Nicholas Walker, M.D.
Dr. Nicholas Walker, M.D., earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in May of 2000. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine in 2003 from Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. In 2006 he completed a Fellowship program in Cardiovascular Diesease from the University of Iowa and in 2007 completed Fellowship training from the University of Iowa in Interentional Cardiology.
Dr. Walker is Board-certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease. He joined Mercy's medical staff in 2007 and practices at the Iowa City Heart Center, P.C. in Iowa City, which is an affiliate of Mercy Hospital. Cardiology Consultation Clinic
John Chase, M.D.
Dr. John Chase, M.D., earned his medical degree from the University of North Carolina, and completed his residency from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. In 1996, he went to the University of Iowa for a Cardiology Fellowship. He remained on faculty after his fellowship and his expertise is in the areas of Heart Failure, Cardiac Transplant, Pulmonary Hypertension and diagnsotic cardiac catheterization.
Dr. Chase has been a part of the Heart Failure, Heart Transplant and Pulomonary Hypertension Programs since 1998. He served as the interim head of the Heart Failure Program from November 2005 to July 2006. Dr. Chase is an active invasive cardiologist and has extensive echocardiographic experience. Dr. Chase is an Associate with the American College of Physicians, a member of the University of Iowa Physicians, American Society of Echocardiography and Heart Failure Society of America.

Dr. Dwayne Capper, M.D. earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1992. He completed a Preliminary Surgical Residency and Otolaryngology Residency from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1997. He is Board-certified in Otolaryngology. Dr. Capper practices at Otologic Medical Services in Iowa City, which is affiliated through Mercy Hospital.

Todd Gothard, M.D.
Dr. Todd Gothard received his medical degree with honors from the University of North Carolina. Following an Internship in Internal Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, he completed a one-year fellowship in refractive, corneal and cataract surgery at the Phillips Eye Institute and the University of Minnesota. He specializes in refractive, corneal and cataract surgery and has been performing refractive surgery since 1990. He has also been actively involved in clinical trials with the excimer laser and has more than nine years of experience with the excimer laser. Dr. Gothard has practiced at the Wolfe Eye Clinic in Cedar Rapids since 1993. He performs cataract surgeries for patients at Washington County Hospital and Clinics every second and fourth Wednesdays of the month.

Dr. Howard Cox, D.P.M., received his medical degree from the College of Podiatric Medicine & Surgery at Des Moines University in 1992. Maria Morcuende, M.D.
Dr. Maria Morcuende received her medical degree from the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, Spain in 1994, Residency in 1999 from the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics and a Fellowship in 2000 from Associate Programme in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, Arbours Association, London, UK.
