Welcome to Washington, Iowa!

It is the county seat of Washington County and is equally 250 miles from Chicago, St. Louis, Kansas City and Minneapolis-St. Paul. It lies within a growing eastern Iowa trade corridor that includes Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. Major highway and rail service run through the community. First class commercial air service is an hour away.

It is surrounded by some of the world's richest farmland and Agriculture anchors the local economy.

Economic diversification is provided by four manufacturing plants. Start-up industries are also finding Washington a good business climate, including 3 recently going into production.

Both the downtown and outlying retail areas in Washington offer unique retail shops, professional offices, and service businesses where there is a good mix of locally owned and franchised businesses. Washington's retail shops offer a mix of clothing and shoe stores, home furnishings, antique and collectibles, art prints, health food and much more. No matter what you might be looking for, you will be able to find it in Washington.

The theater, art exhibits, concerts and great literature are a part of living in Washington. Athletic events are available for all age groups along with beautiful parks, a golf course, tennis courts, swimming, fishing, hunting and the Community Y offers exercise and recreation.

The Washington School System provides an environment of learning which prepares students to live in today's society and have the opportunity to experience success. The schools include Stewart Elementary which contains grades K-3, Lincoln Elementary which contains grades 4-6, Washington Junior High which contains grades 7-9 and Washington High School which is a three year high school. Colleges and Universities nearby include Kirkwood, University of Iowa and Iowa Wesleyan College.

Kewash Nature Trail is a converted railroad corridor that extends approximately 13 miles from Washington to Keota through West Chester. It is an excellent trail for hiking, bicycling and cross-country skiing.
