Emergency Care

If you need immediate medical attention, call 9-1-1

During an emergency, what matters most is prompt, expert care. Our Emergency Room is a Level IV Community Trauma Care Facility with medical professionals that are ready to provide patients with fast, expert care at a moment's notice. Our facility is equipped to stabilize a patient's immediate needs and when needed has access to specialized services and air care to a tertiary hospital.

This January, WCHC welcomed a new team of board-certified emergency providers. This change comes in an effort to be more responsive to patient expectations and provide a level of quality of healthcare that residents of Washington County and the surrounding area have come to know of WCHC services.

The Emergency Room team of board-certified physicians and skilled trauma and advanced life support nurses provide consistent, dependable care when and where patients need it most. Our team has experience treating every emergency imaginable and utilizes the latest lifesaving techniques. Our staff maintains certifications in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, ENPC or Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Basic Life Support, and Trauma Nurse Core Course (approved by the Emergency Nurses Association). With collaboration among all WCHC departments, ER patients will receive the highest level of medical expertise.

For optimal comfort and patient care our Emergency Room features private ER treatment rooms and a double-bay trauma room. For safety our hospital has a separate Ambulance entrance with immediate access to all critical areas of patient care.

Chest Pain Center Accreditation

WCHC is a Chest Pain Center Accredited facility from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care. WCHC is the first and only critical access hospital in Iowa to receive this distinction. As a Chest Pain Center, our hospital and emergency staff have demonstrated a high level of expertise in dealing with patients who arrive with symptoms of heart attack. WCHC implements standardized diagnostic and treatment protocols that provide more efficient and effective evaluation, as well as more appropriate and rapid treatment of patients presenting with chest pain and other heart attack symptoms. Our treatment protocols include partnerships with local EMS ground transport agencies, air transport agencies, and receiving centers including Mercy Iowa City and the University of Iowa Hospital. This designation represents WCHC's commitment and dedication to providing emergent patients with the very best care with reduced time of treatment during the critical early stages of a heart attack.

Though we hope you never need us; in an emergency, WCHC is the choice for expert emergency care.
